Dir. Adrian Noble | UK 2019 | 91 mins | PG
A delicate and intimate story about the relationship between iconic British artist L.S. Lowry (Timothy Spall) and his mother Elizabeth (Vanessa Redgrave), who he lived with until her death.
Lowry, not yet established as an artist, works as a rent collector, walking the streets of Salford, mixing with factory workers and observing the town closely. In the evenings, he takes art classes and paints until the early hours of the morning. He is resolutely loyal and well mannered towards his bitter mother, who tries to dissuade her bachelor son from pursuing his artistic ambitions and never misses a chance to tell him what a disappointment he is to her. At the same time, she is the very reason he paints anything at all, as he desperately seeks to create something, anything, which will make her happy.
A wonderfully observed film about art, ambition, and the relationship between mother and son.
