Dir. Pedro Almodóvar | Spain | 99 mins | cert 15 | subtitles
Another chance to catch this wonderful film...
The great Pedro Almodóvar returns with a quietly dramatic and captivating story of a mother’s mysterious relationship with her daughter, based on an Alice Munro collection of short stories, Runaway.
In an elegant, minimalist apartment, Julieta prepares to leave Madrid with her partner (Dario Grandinetti), only to run in to a childhood acquaintance of her daughter, Antía. Reminded of her past, Julieta realises she cannot leave without first exploring her past and the secret that caused her daughter to abandon her without warning years ago.
Adriana Ugarte and Emma Suárez both play Julieta at the different stages of her life and give brave, enriching performances. Though full of Almodóvar’s customary emotional drama, this is a subtle and gripping affair, which also features the inimitable Rossy de Palma.
