John Liot is an award-winning photographer from the Channel Island, Jersey. For three years Cornwall became an adopted homeland for John as he studied on the acclaimed Press and Editorial Photography course at Falmouth University. John is back in Falmouth for his first solo-exhibition and will be giving a talk about his latest project, as well as a candid and honest look into what life as a freelance photographer fresh out of University has been like.
A year removed from the comfortable, blissful ignorance of student life, John has been pursuing photography as a full-time career. With highs and lows along the way he has gained valuable knowledge of the industry, but perhaps a more-so valuable understanding of who he is as a person and a professional. Trips to New York for the launch and in-person signing of his first photobook, a fully expenses-paid trip to Switzerland to teach a one-on-one photography workshop and selling his work in a highly-regarded gallery for several hundred pounds; the benefits to freelance photography have been great. But the reality is, he's 25, lives with his parents, has £120 to his name and recently got fired from his job working on a building site. No two photographers have the same origin story, and of those two photographers only one may get to have a success story.
