Peter Skidmore is a maritime historian with a particular interest in West Country coastal trade in the early nineteenth century. In 2015 his research into the trade in manganese from Cornwall to Liverpool in this period was recognised by the Royal Institution of Cornwall who awarded him the Henwood Prize for the most outstanding piece of original research on Cornwall published in the Institution's Journal over the previous three years.
This is a rare opportunity to hear first hand about this research. In his talk, Peter will look at the location of the manganese mines, the points of shipment, the vessels employed and the uses for the material once it reached Liverpool.
