In 2013, the Poly hosted an Exhibition “Falmouth on Track” commemorating the 150th anniversary of the branch line from Truro. Using some of those photographs, with other material from the Archive, we look at how it all began and the impact it has had on the town over the years.
The original plans for
the Cornwall Railway were for a line through Cornwall to terminate at Falmouth. However, when the section from Truro was
finally opened, over 20 years later, much had changed. Although the event in August 1863 was
celebrated in the town as the arrival at the “legitimate terminus”, it has
remained a branch line ever since.
This talk accompanies the Legitimate Terminus exhibition - which is the work of both current and past volunteers. We hope it will be of interest to you. The Poly houses thousands of documents and photographs relating to the history of Falmouth and the surrounding area that have been accumulated over more than 35 years. Creating searchable indexes, digitising photographs and topic research is carried out by volunteers.
If you have documents, photographs or family stories to share with us on this or other local topics, we would love to hear from you. Leave a message at the Poly Guild desk, write to us at the Poly or to history@thepoly.org.
