FBF: Joelle Taylor: Maryville

What happens when a poet invents a town, populates it with outsiders, lovers, fighters and ghosts, and then invites us inside?

Joelle Taylor, one of Britain’s most distinctive contemporary poets and performers, comes to Falmouth with Maryville, her new collection and the latest chapter in a body of work exploring identity, class, gender, sexuality, violence, survival and belonging.

Maryville is an imaginary town inhabited by characters living at the edges of conventional society. Moving between poetry, storytelling and performance, Taylor creates a place that is at once fantastical and recognisable, drawing on lives and communities too often pushed out of sight. The result is fierce, funny, tender and theatrical: poetry that demands to be heard as well as read.

Taylor has spent decades performing on stages in Britain and internationally. Her collection C+nto & Othered Poems, an exploration of the butch lesbian counterculture of the 1990s, won the T. S. Eliot Prize, while her debut novel, The Night Alphabet, brought her distinctive storytelling into fiction.

At Falmouth Book Festival, Joelle will combine live performance and readings with conversation, exploring Maryville, The Night Alphabet and the experiences and communities that have shaped her writing.
