Dirs. Tomm Moore, Nora Twomey | Ireland 2009 | 75 min | PG
The first in our series of family friendly films screening this summer at The Poly is The Secret of Kells, a charming Oscar-nominated animation from Ireland. Celtic mythology, magic and fantasy come together in a riot of colour and detail about the power of imagination and faith to carry humanity through dark times.
At the heart of the story is The Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript created more than a millennium ago in a remote Irish abbey. With the Viking hordes approaching, the monks of Kells are forced to turn their attention from transcribing manuscripts to building barricades. The future of the precious book is in jeopardy, and it falls to young Brendan, a twelve-year-old novice monk, to face his deepest fears and save the day…
Filled with vivid scenes of action and adventure, delicate dream-like sequences, and tonnes of creativity, this hand-drawn production from talented Irish animator Tom Moore will captivate and inspire young and old alike.
