Dir. Richard Eyre | UK/US 2018 | 105 min | 12A
Hot on the heels of On Chesil Beach, Ian McEwan again adapts his own novel in this riveting drama about a High Court judge (Emma Thompson) who finds her personal and professional crises colliding.
This stately, moving drama follows Fiona (Thompson - never better), a judge who is married to her work - as her own marriage (to Stanley Tucci) flounders, she must decide if Adam (Fionn Whitehead), a 17-year-old with leukaemia, should have a blood transfusion that will save his life - against his Jehovah's Witness beliefs. Fiona finds herself taking unusual measures to reach her final verdict - measures that will have far-reaching consequences...
Directed by Richard Eyre (Notes on a Scandal), this is a heartbreaking, intelligent and sophisticated drama that brings to life complex moral questions (particularly in the wake of the Charlie Gard case).
