Do You Want to Launch Your Career in the Creative Sector?

The Poly, the much-loved arts centre in the middle of Falmouth, has a paid Intern vacancy.  We want to appoint a Poly Guild Intern to work in our exciting retail space for local craftspeople and makers. We are looking for a flexible, enthusiastic person who is able and willing to use their own initiative and take responsibility for projects they are assigned, and who is also able to work as a member of the Poly team, undertaking a range of tasks as necessary.

The Intern will be offered a 2-week work-experience trial, followed by a six month contract. 

Pay and conditions:  30 hours per week @ National Minimum Wage (21 – 24 years old: £6.70 p.h, Under 21: £5.30 p.h.)  Please note that applicants must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends. 

This post is part-funded by the Creative Employment Programme, so successful applicants must be 16-24 years of age and in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance at the time of appointment.

Job Description
Creative Employment Project Intern

Post Title: Poly Guild Intern

Salary: £6.70 per hour

Hours: 30 hours per week, normally between the hours of 10.45 am to 7.15 pm Monday to Saturday.

Contract period: 26 weeks

Holiday Entitlement:     28 days per year (inc. Bank Holidays), pro rata

Sick Pay Entitlement:   Statutory Sick Pay

Line Manager: Guild & Galleries Manager

This Creative Intern vacancy provides an opportunity to gain experience of working in a new concept design store within an established venue, develop understanding of the local arts environment and retail skills. Training and support will be provided by qualified, experienced professionals with access to external training as appropriate.

The Poly is a historic organisation and arts venue with an established reputation for offering a range of high quality opportunities to experience and learn about arts, science and local history. The Poly Guild opened at the end of August 2015, to showcase Falmouth artists and generate income to support The Poly’s charitable activities. 

Job Purpose:

To support the staff team in establishing the Poly Guild as a high quality, successful retail outlet selling a range of original, high quality work by Falmouth artists and designers.


Assist with all aspects of The Guild, including:

Market research and competitor analysis; Maintaining positive relationships with artists and suppliers; Stock control and display; Providing high levels of customer service; Cash handling and meeting sales targets; Sales analysis and pricing; Recruiting, training and supporting Guild volunteers; Organising promotional activities and events; Promoting the Poly Guild online and in the local community. 

General Duties including:

Ensure that high levels of customer service are maintained, support effective communication across the organisation, with partners and visitors to The Poly; Support promotional activities across The Poly; Work together with other members of the staff, volunteers and Trustees, to create a positive working environment; Assist in Front of House duties (e.g. Box Office, Bar, Marketing, Events) as necessary; Work as a member of The Poly team, supporting the consistent delivery of high quality services and implementation of Poly policies and procedures across the organisation; Abide by The Poly Code of Conduct, and support the Mission, Vision and Priorities of the organisation; Undertake additional duties when required to ensure the smooth running of The Poly. This may include moving furniture, stock, etc.

Person Specification 




Five GCSEs including Maths and English at grade C or above or equivalent


Experience and skills



Experience of displaying products/works of art


Experience of handling cash in a work setting


Teamwork experience


Experience of working with the public


Experience of using social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc)


Knowledge and Personal Attributes



Passion for the arts


Enthusiasm and commitment to developing retail skills in an arts environment


Ability to work independently and use initiative


Ability to work flexibly within a team
