Dir. Benedikt Erlingsson | Iceland, France, Ukraine 2018 | 100 min | 12A | Subtitled
Benedikt Erlingsson follows up his 2013 hit Of Horses and Men with this warm-hearted and utterly unique look at an Icelandic eco-warrior juggling environmental action and foster motherhood.
Halla (the formidable Halldóra Geirharõsdóttir) leads a quiet, routine existence. But her upbeat exterior hides a secret double life as a committed environmental activist, waging a one-woman-war on the local aluminium industry to protect the stunning highland landscape that is under threat. As she takes down drones, explodes pylons, and fires crossbows, she receives unexpected news - her dreams of becoming a mother may be fulfilled sooner than she thinks. What will come first - her eco crusade, or the future of a daughter she has yet to meet?
Soundtracked by a great Icelandic oompah band and a Ukrainian vocal trio (played quirkily by musicians on screen), Woman at War is a real treat: playful, touching, and funny. We think its mix of gentle satire, environmental activism and off-the-wall humour will really resonate.
Tickets: £7.75 / £6.00 (inc. Poly Fund)
Please note the screening on Tuesday at 12:30 is the parent & baby screening.
