Falmouth History Archive // WW1: Faces & Stories

A chance to hear some unusual and quirky stories associated with the First World War and Cornwall from the 100 Faces 100 Stories collaborative project by Cornwall's archives and museums.

History researcher, writer and teacher Joanna Mattingly will explore different types of involvement such as recruiting sergeants, combatants, women, essential war workers, conscientious objectors, children and animals. She will focus particularly on stories and faces from or connected to the Falmouth area, including Falmouth History Archive's own story of local doctor's wife Faith Harris who went to America in 1917 to buy railway rolling stock to rebuild Britain's railways.

Joanna Mattingly is a freelance history researcher and writer who has lived in Cornwall for 30 years. In 2008 she coordinated the Poly's 175th anniversary exhibition 'Chasing Clouds'. She is currently teaching for the WEA and working on an edition of Stratton church records 1512-81 for the Devon and Cornwall Record Society. http://www.wea-cornwall.co.uk/tutor/joanna-mattingly
 
100 Faces 100 Stories is a collaborative project by Cornwall's archives and museums, Funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund enabled the publication of a 100 Faces 100 Stories booklet and the creation of a searchable website: www.100firstworldwarstories.co.uk.
 
A copy of the booklet is available to browse during Falmouth HIstory Archive public open sessions on Tues and Thurs mornings.
