The Future Of… Creativity

How do creative processes vary across disciplines, from science to fine art or engineering to music? How have new technologies affected creative processes in the recent past and how will emerging technologies (such as AI) affect human creativity in the near future? How might technological change affect creative activity, productivity, innovation, social well-being and wealth generation in Falmouth and Cornwall as a whole?

Professor Alan Cummings, The Poly’s new President, will introduce the exciting series of forthcoming “The Future Of …” events and make a short presentation about creativity in action based on his career experiences. He will then chair a discussion with several of Falmouth’s champions of creativity and innovation, which will lead into an open discussion with the audience about what the future may hold.

Alan Cummings became the President of The Poly six months ago. His education and career have involved him in an unusually broad range of disciplines, roles and activities beginning as a Chemistry student at Imperial College London, and concluding as Pro-Rector of the Royal College of Art. Along the way, he became an eminent conservator of paintings, a teacher and research leader at postgraduate level and a songwriter and performer. His aim for The Poly is to strengthen its reputation as a place where curious, creative, innovative and concerned people gather to discuss the opportunities and threats that face humanity over the next 20 to 30 years.

The Panel:

Tom Adams: Falmouth-based musician and producer with over 10 years of experience working as a recording artist in the music industry.

Jo Browse: Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography on the Cornwall campus of Exeter University with a background in physics and computational science.

Mandy Jandrell: Dean of the Faculty of Creative Arts & Communication at Falmouth University.

Sam Lanyon: Falmouth-based entrepreneur, innovator, designer and technologist.

Matt Watkins: Senior Lecturer in Robotics & Computing at the Games Academy in Falmouth University.
