Dir. Peter Stephan Jungk | Austria 2016 | 91 min | PG
Filmmaker Peter Stephan Jungk delves into the motivations of his great aunt, Edith Tudor-Hart, one of the most innovative and iconic photographers working in Britain during the 1930s and 1940s who was also one of the Soviet Union’s most valued spies and an architect of the Cambridge Five.
While living a double life as a spy for the KGB, Edith recruited Kim Philby and helped create the Cambridge Five, the Soviet Union’s most successful spy ring in the UK, which infiltrated the very top of British intelligence (the inspiration for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy). The film recounts her remarkable life, told through her photographs and animated re-enactments.
Directed by her great nephew, Peter Stephan Jungk, Tracking Edith reflects on Tudor-Hart’s extraordinary life, both as an undercover agent and a deeply empathetic photographer, depicting the social deprivation of the day.
