Sue's story: Renovating the Bar

We had made a successful grant application to Cornwall Council for funding to cover repairing and improving the annex, technical improvements in the theatre; and decorating, repairing and reequipping the bar and library. Most of the funding went into the annex where we had a contractor and Paul Rowan did the tech improvements in the theatre on a shoestring. Trustee Mike Harris did all the architectural work and listed building applications etc for free. A group of volunteers including trustees put in 405 hours of volunteer labour into doing up the bar and library, ably supported by Karl Owen. The biggest event was moving the bar around as its original position was not efficient and caused massive queries down the staircase. One Sunday 6 of us moved the incredibly heavy bar into its new position, through 90 degrees. Pix attached. That deserved several pints. My other lasting memory of that month was working with Sarah and Dave to sand and revarnish the library floor which was a seriously big task. Lots of people helped out in repairing and decorating whilst Susannah went through the theatre with a fine tooth comb cleaning all the seats. It reminded me how much people love The Poly and how they are really prepared to put themselves out to support it.
