Women, Money, and Mining in Georgian Cornwall
Women in Cornwall were participants in trade, mining, and shipping. Landowners, traders, and managers of money.
Illustrated by women of Falmouth and west Cornwall this talk focuses on those who traded or managed their family’s money. Including women of the Fox family in Falmouth and the Borlase family in Mount’s Bay. Drawing on letters, diaries, and accounts written by the women themselves.
In the home, women budgeted, planned and organised family spending. In communities, some women were decision makers as well as participants in saving clubs, trading enterprises, property and estate management.
Charlotte MacKenzie is the author of many books on Cornish and women’s history. Her research on women, money and mining has support from the Q Fund.
