An exhibition representing the richness and beauty of Cornish fishing through a collection of studies and paintings. Jo and Fleur explore and celebrate what is abundant in our sea and the traditional Falmouth working boats that form part of our cultural heritage.
Friends since childhood, this is the first time Jo and Fleur have collaborated creatively. Working from observation and en plein air they explore and celebrate what is abundant in our sea and the traditional boats that fished our waters. With a studio close by, Fleur can often be found painting the old working boats at Mylor Harbour and the glossy water around them. Recording directly from observation Jo paints and draws the fish and shellfish caught locally by her husband. Both providing an abundant and rich source material for their creative work.
They met at the old Tremough Convent School, Penryn. Then following time at Truro Sixth Form, both studied art. Fleur did a Foundation at Falmouth then a degree at Farnham and Jo did a Graphics diploma at Cornwall College and then a degree at Manchester Polytechnic. They both pursued creative careers and after living away returned to Cornwall and raised families locally. They have remained friends and as their children have grown up have had time in recent years to focus on their own creative practice. They both benefitted from a traditional education in the principles of art and design and the practice of first-hand observational work which is at the core of their respective work
