"Something rather wonderful" - Time Out
Vibrant and inventive all-singing, all-dancing, bitter-sweet romance; a truly original film from the director who sought to create an enchanting, poignant fantasy world governed by chance, love and memory.
Forsaking the familiar backdrop of a Broadway show Demy chooses to revel in the myth and magic of everyday romance, in all its sentimental and banal glory.
A shopgirl (Catherine Deneuve) and a poor mechanic fall in love only to be separated when he departs for military service. Discovering she is pregnant, she is nudged into marrying an accommodating diamond merchant by her ambitious mother.
Vivid colours and elegant camera choreography are bound together by Michel Legrand's sumptuous score.
