Postponed: CFF: South West Regional Shorts

A showcase of the best South West filmmaking talent, bringing worthy filmmakers to national attention. This selection represents the most innovative and adventurous work from filmmakers who display a stylistic boldness, strength of form, and the ambition to use the medium in a way that resists cliché. 

Where possible please make bookings in your bubble, this will allow as many people to attend as safely possible. 

Quiescent | Dir Aaron Massie | 02:35 | UK

It’s a film about a period of reflection before a big change, a longing for somewhere/something. A visual love letter to the beautiful county of Cornwall. 

An Tarow | Dir Jonny Dry | 17:16 | UK 

When his daydreams become inextricably woven with reality,a quiet young boy finds enough courage from his mother’s Cornish tales to confront this abusive father.

Nut Pops | Dir | Lucie Eckersley | 09:16 | UK

An employee at Nut Pops, a cereal company call centre, has the dullest and most mundane life you could ever imagine. After another uneventful day, he begins to experience vivid fantasies about a more exciting life.

Liskeard Unlocked: The Children's Strike | Dir Matt Thornhill | 06:45 | UK 

This short film gives a glimpse of the lives of Victorian children working in local mines, juxtaposed with the lives of modern-day children performing the promenade play and taking part in the Global School Strike for Climate Change in 2019.

Swivel is a short gender-fluid dance story, a brave leap of faith, that moves to express the courage it takes to explore sexuality and self with true equality, acceptance and compassion.       

It Rains More Than The National Average | Ben Ward | 5:39 | UK

A poem about a child growing up in Cornwall. It explores both the affable and the awful realities behind growing up Cornish, seen through the didactic lens of both the confessional and the social commentary.

A short, dark, animated true story of spiralling mental health, homelessness and addiction.

BLUE | Dir David Smith | 2:51 | UK

Three years on, John, a local fisherman, continues to struggle with the loss of his son.

What Is Grief? | Dir Aj Lornie, Pete Morgan | 04:30 | UK

A short scripted narrated documentary, told in the first person, exploring the journey of grief. A raw and introspective piece, created with a vision, to resonate with those who have experienced loss and can relate to the notion of Grief. 

Closed Until Further Notice | Jason Gregg | 9:45 | UK

Conspiracy theories, love and turmeric! A family cut off through isolation comes together via a conference call.  Created remotely from home, on a zero budget, during the Covid 19 lockdown. 

So Far | Dir Hannah Baxter-Freeman | 4:05 | UK

So Far is a short film exploring connection in a time of separation. It was filmed and edited entirely in isolation.

Slow Burn | Dir Louise Brett | 6:26 | UK

Slow Burn is a short artists' film about the dark and earthy material of charcoal and its transformation from wood, a process that has changed little in 30,000 years. 

Anoraks | Zoe Alker | 5:53 | UK

Anoraks is a comedy short film following an unlikely pair’s pilgrimage to a reenactment near King Arthur’s birthplace, Tintagel. These misfits must put aside their sibling differences to travel to the heartland of their obsession.

A contributor-driven short that follows people descending into mindless ruts during the lockdown. Created over 6 weeks, the montage captures a moment in time for dozens of individuals living in Europe and the USA.

House Rules

  • Please do not visit us if you have any symptoms of Covid-19 (a high temperature, a new continuous cough, or loss or changes to your sense of smell or taste). If you or any member of your household develops symptoms of Covid-19 after booking tickets please contact us for a refund.
  • This event will be hosted in the theatre, our box office software will automatically block out seats either side of your party to ensure social distancing is observed. We reserve the right to move your seats if required and will contact you in advance of the film if this is required.
  • Seating bubbles will be able to accommodate groups up to 6 and are subject to availability. All seats in a bubble must be bought in one transaction. Social distancing between bubbles will be observed.
  • Seating bubbles can only be made up of people in your own household or support bubble. We ask that you please only book tickets with people who you are living with or have formed a support bubble with.

  • Audience members are required to wear face coverings (except for those who are exempt). Face coverings do not need to be worn while drinking.
  • We are working in accordance with government guidelines and so these rules are subject to changes. We will send an email prior to the film with more information, but if you have any questions please contact us at info@thepoly.org and we'd be happy to help.
