Textile Surface Decoration with Appliqué & Stitch

Enjoy a day working with colour, texture, cloth, pattern and line to craft exciting unique textiles.  At the beginning of the workshop you’ll be shown examples and discussion will be encouraged to explain all that can be achieved.

Bring your sewing machine* and any threads and fabrics that you may specifically want to work with for your textile surface designs.  You’ll be given a length of white or cream cotton to use as a base cloth for your patterns or artworks (ca 50cms x 150cms). Fusible web combined with colourful materials and a variety of thread types will be available for the patterning and embellishment. After a time of experimenting and sampling you’ll choose the stitch types (hand or free-motion or a combination) and get creative on a key piece.

Participants have the opportunity to follow an artistic or an applied-arts route to success during the day; creations may stand alone as fine art textile pieces or result in having a clear and specific function. The learning trajectory on the day will be up to you. You’ll have the  support of an expert teacher who’s likely to introduce you to aspects of the workings of your sewing machine that you may never have considered before. 

*Participants must ensure that their sewing machines are in good working order and that they feel capable and safe when operating them. Personal sewing equipment can be brought along too although some equipment will be provided by the tutor. Stitchers at any skill level are welcome on this workshop.

Workshop is for ages 18+.
