Sparkling Seas & Fresh Faces: The Conservation of Cornish Paintings

If you are a fan of 'The Repair Shop' this is the talk for you! Drawing on her experience as an Accredited Conservator-Restorer of easel paintings, Sarah Cove ACR will discuss paintings on canvas, panel and board in a range of mediums by native Cornish painters and 'incomer' artists that chose to make Cornwall their home. These include historic portraits from the 18-20th centuries, works by artists that worked in the St Ives, Newlyn and Lamorna Groups- such Stanhope Forbes, Garstin Cox and Patrick Heron- a famous 1930s portrait of Barbara Hepworth by Ben Nicholson and modern works by Brian Pearce, Micheal Praed and Fred Yates. Modern conservation methods and sometimes difficult ethical decisions are discussed showcasing pictures from heritage and private collections in and around Cornwall.

Sarah Cove ACR has worked as a paintings conservator-restorer in London and Cornwall for over 40 years. With a background in Fine Art and Art History, she trained at The Courtauld, London, in the 1980s. She carried out Internships at the V&A and the National Portrait Gallery before working freelance from 1986. She now specialises in British paintings: mainly portraits from the 16th century to the present and 19th and 20th century landscapes and seascapes. She was Accredited by the UK Institute for Conservation in 1999 and has worked for private owners and historic, corporate and institutional collections ever since. She is an internationally experienced lecturer and presenter and she has made numerous TV and media appearances including BBC's 'Fake or Fortune?'. For more information: www.sarahcoveacr.com
