M A L A M! stands for 'Music Art Lyrics Automatic Memories' - which describes how Irene creates her unique and intriguing artworks - by listening to music from sunrise to sunset… everyday!
Irene says: ‘To be honest, music and art are my true passions and have been for as long as I can remember. I have a very eclectic taste - everything from 30’s Blues to Grime and every genre in-between. I work automatically creating imagery, as it happens, with no forethought, just letting the music and my inner voice work in a collaborative free-for-all. I realised that as I worked, certain lyrics, album titles, even the genre of the music I was listening to evoked a connection and seemed to fit perfectly to the piece I was working on. I have written the album, year and artist on my artwork labels to help connect the music with the work.’
'I once wrote as part of an artist statement why I painted. The answer, "I paint because I can’t sing!" Some might argue, "you can’t paint either!" But if you heard my voice... believe me you’d definitely agree with what I wrote in that statement.'
