Victoria Gillow: Well Grounded

Well Grounded: An exhibition of paintings by Victoria Gillow.

I am a Cornish painter, based in Falmouth.  My practice derives from a lifetime of looking. My Cornish heritage and deep connection with the land and sea of the Cornish peninsular has informed my work as a painter - generating work mainly on-site. I love the transience of time and weather. Revisiting spaces time and time over, but never quite seeing the same - my work is a unique response in paint to how I see and feel on the day.

Well Grounded is a response to two distinct parts of my painting practice:

I am grounded in Cornwall, its coast, its history and my history - a very personal attachment to coast and the land of my fathers. My DNA is in the soil, part of this land, with generations of family before me mining, farming and inhabiting this space.

Well grounded also denotes the ground on which I work – the first colour I choose to paint and how it supports and informs the painting. The history of the paint, as it is layered, also reflects the history of the land and sea.

I am inspired by walking and painting around the Cornish Coast. I am interested in paths well trodden and how the essence of a place is not just in the physical, but in the energy, the spirit of a place, time and weather.

The last 18 months have been very reflective. Now, I am ‘well grounded’ in the sense of who I am and how my paintings are part of me physically connecting with my space.
