In his debut novel, The Lip, Falmouth-based writer Charlie Carroll tells the story of a vulnerable young woman living alone in a caravan on the Cornish coast. He uses her story to explore the unseen side of Cornwall, where the shifting uncertainties of the future breed resentment and mistrust. Patrick Gale called it an "unsparing debut novel [that] portrays the unromantic side of Cornwall few visitors see and which so many novelists choose to overlook."
Catrina Davies
memoir, Homesick: Why I live in a Shed tells her deeply
personal story of a country-wide housing crisis, that grapples with class,
economics, mental health and nature. It shows how housing can trap us or set us
free, and what it means to feel at home.
Charlie and Catrina will be joined by Mark Jenkin, the West
Cornwall-based filmmaker whose BAFTA-winning feature film BAIT
became a significant breakout arthouse hit in 2019.
They will be discussing why working class
Cornish voices are seldom heard in mainstream culture and exploring the
way in which Cornwall is so often portrayed as an idealised landscapes of
bucket-and-spade holidays and second homes.
