Roy says if he has a soul it is surely nourished by the landscape around him. Growing up in London, the only greenery he saw as a child was in corporation parks, where the grass was like astroturf and the plants grew in straight lines. Trees were spaced mathematically, usually in avenues. Only ever visiting Southend, he never realised that sea could be turquoise, and sand could be yellow. Since 1973 he has lived and worked in Cornwall, and his view of nature has been remodelled. These paintings reflect Roy's love of landscape.
Roy started his working life as a research chemist with English China Clays (now Imerys). Painting was a hobby throughout. When he retired he metamorphosed into an artist. Roy paints for enjoyment, rather than to express a political or social message. He says his work is intended to give pleasure rather than to stimulate too much debate!
