Paul's recent work involves abstract colourful paintings on found wood – panels, which he retrieves from the Penryn and Fal rivers, that have usually been parts of old boats. These tie his work into a sense of place, (Falmouth), and evoke memories of walks at various times of day, low tide, and in different weather conditions.
On one level you can read the paintings from the gesture of the brushstrokes that will reference the landscape, the sea, the weather and time of day. Another perspective is to view the juxtaposition of printed images, words and patterns that deliver inroads to influences of other artists - as well as a marriage of technical complexity within the simplified structure of the frame. The various supports and the inclusion of wooden fragments generate their own demands, which Paul works with to create each unique piece.
Having retired completely from his career as a senior lecturer and international standards verifier, Paul is totally absorbed with his making process; observing and recording then transforming findings in the studio from memory.
