This mythical, fairytale inspired series operates with a diaristic approach, providing a window into another world. Through these characters, and the narratives they explore, Bethan has learnt more about herself. As the title implies, when placed in the particulars of a situation, the characters toe the line of known and unknown, between friend and foe. The images encapsulate a whimsical visual quality, yet mask an embedded disturbing narrative. The work further dives into the fictional and the imaginary with the use of dream-like collage.
A significant influence within Bethan's work are elements that most resonate with her childhood, such as: colourful illustrations, fairytales and handmade crafts. She found in two of her greatest inspirations, Shary Boyle and Anna Gaskell, the culmination of all these things. Bethan has always enjoyed crafts and been interested in art, and some of her fondest childhood memories are of herself, her parents, and her sister partaking in craft activities. University has allowed Bethan to expand and rekindle this love, allowing her to explore her creativity like never before. Spending some time at an animation studio, made her realise how much she loved physically making things that, through their details, exponentially strengthen narrative elements. This experience, encouraged her to utilise handmade elements and drastically change her own practice.
