Dir. Hirokazu Kore-eda | 2023 | 129 mins | South Korea

Hirokazu Kore-eda's (Shoplifters, Still Walking, Like Father, Like Son) first South Korean production is a delicate and big-hearted drama about a young mother who leaves her baby at a church, unaware that black marketers intend to sell it on to a childless couple willing to pay big bucks.

On a rainy night in Busan, So-young (Lee Ji Eun) leaves her baby in a 'baby box', a safe place set up in Korean churches for new mothers to leave unwanted infants. In a twist of fate, he's picked up by two men (Parasite's Song Kang Ho, who won up the Cannes Best Actor prize for his performance, and Gang Dong-won) who intend to sell him at a high price to desperate parents. So-young tracks the pair down and decides to join their pursuit (along with a seven-year-old stowaway from a nearby orphanage), but as they search for a new family, the unlikely group evolves into something of a family themselves...

Heartwarming, funny and moving, this is a film of gentle humanity and great warmth.

★★★★★’“Broker,” a road trip odyssey reflecting on the family we choose and the family we tearfully let go of. Absorbing and heartwarming, it’s easy to forget that this tender drama is about human trafficking.’ Iana Murray, The Playlist

★★★★★ ‘One of the year’s most delightful films. Hirokazu Kore-eda’s big-hearted…follow-up to Shoplifters is directed with impeccable skill, delicacy and compassion.’ Nicholas Barber, BBC
