When it was first built in 1789, Grove Hill (now Grove Hill House), was the most spectacular Georgian mansion in Falmouth. Standing at the top of its extensive grounds, it enjoyed panoramic views of the harbour and sea. But what was it like living in such a large house? And what made it a happy home for the families who lived there?
Mike Jenks traces the origins of the Grove Hill estate, house, and gardens, intertwined with insights into the members of the Fox family who built it and lived there for around 150 years.
Drawing on rarely seen material, a picture emerges of a well-loved home of some opulence, and gardens that were renowned for their exotic plants, but that were also productive. Many generations of the family lived there, and as Quakers, their lifestyle, while not overtly showy, was one that was enjoyed to the full, both at home and away.
The talk uncovers the way that the house was arranged and managed. It mentions the art works and collections inside, as well as the gardens, which attracted many distinguished visitors. It also delves into the enjoyments of a home life with parties, picnics, trips around Cornwall and visits to London.
A well-illustrated book, Grove Hill: Falmouth’s finest eighteenth-century mansion, will be available to buy for anyone interested after the talk.
