Join us for a lecture on the historic and cultural context of Cornish tourism, presented by Louis Turner, author of The Global Horde: International Tourism and the Pleasure Periphery. The lecture will explore the impact of tourism on Cornish culture and economy, as well as its place within the global industry.
Turner will provide a brief overview of the historic development of the international tourist industry, from Roman decadence in the Bay of Naples, to the Grand Tour of the 1600s and 1700s, and the coming of mass tourism through Thomas Cook.
The lecture will also delve into the challenges and opportunities of Cornish tourism, including its isolation, the development of hotels, the impact of the Great Western Railway, and the rise of mass tourism and package holidays. Turner will also address important questions such as the potential conflict between tourism and environmental sustainability, and how tourism fits into debates about Cornish identity.
Whether you're a local resident, a frequent visitor, or just curious about the impact of tourism on culture and economy, this lecture is not to be missed.
