This first solo exhibition by Kathryn Burgess demonstrates a wide range of techniques , using acrylics on canvas. A move to Cornwall provided the inspiration for her to explore her long-standing love of shapes, colours and patterns, resulting in beautiful and original seascapes and abstract art.
Kathryn has always been interested in art, but a busy career prevented her from exploring it. Following a move from Norfolk to Cornwall, she was inspired (like many others) by the stunning coastline and marine life, combined with a long-standing love of shapes, patterns and colours. It is, however, the personal connection that a piece of art evokes within an individual that particularly interests Kathryn.
Kathryn's says:
As a primary teacher in Norfolk, I often asked my class, ‘What is art?’. The responses were wide-ranging and all totally valid: ‘Realistic’, ‘Makes you think’, ‘Difficult’ and ‘It could be lots of things’. One comment from a 7-year old, however, stood out - ‘It makes you feel something?’
That’s all I hope for – that my art triggers an emotion, creating a connection, a memory, a feeling.
On seeing ‘Underwater – Seaglass’, one customer wrote:
“I can relive so many of my life experiences in this piece and it pulls me to my Cornish roots, consciously drawing out everything else as I head into survival mode” (VS).
