A two session oil painting course at The Poly: Beginner/Intermediate Level

Lisa Waldron is an artist living and working in Falmouth, Cornwall. Since graduating from Birmingham Institute of Art and Design in 2011, Lisa gained a PGCE in Secondary Art from University College London and worked as a Teacher of Art in South London. Lisa moved to Falmouth to immerse herself in the beautiful coastal landscapes and subtropical gardens the county has to offer. Her exhibition Resonance featuring oil paintings and ink drawings from her Subtropical garden series took place at the Poly in 2022.

Join me on this oil painting course where I will show you how to capture a botanical garden scene in oils. As living evidence of the Victorian plant hunters’ work, the subtropical gardens of Cornwall provide a mesmerising subject for the painter, steeped in history with layer upon layer of vibrant plant life thriving in dynamic compositions of colour, shape and form. The lush green jungle-like gardens are often interspersed with beautiful glasshouse structures, set against landscaped vistas that give way to the distant sea. I will share my approach to capturing these often complex visual arrangements to create a balanced and atmospheric oil painting. 

On this course students will learn how to paint a botanical garden scene in oils. The course will feature a detailed explanation of the oil painting process, colour mixing and after the two sessions come to a close, each participant will take home a finished oil painting on canvas. Experience of painting and drawing is advantageous for this course. All materials will be provided.
