Paul Ryan: Colourful Language

 

This exhibition ties into Paul Ryan's sense of place, (Falmouth), and evoke memories of walks at various times of day, low tide, and in different weather conditions.   

The recent work involves abstract colourful paintings on Found wood – panels that Paul retrieves from the Penryn and Fal rivers that have usually been parts of an old boat.

Paul is influenced by other artists who were colourists; Matisse, Heron, Avery to name some, but developing his own language is his principal goal. He works wet into wet paint generally so there is an immediacy about the surface quality; acrylics have a strong range of modern colours including fluorescents. One level to read the paintings is in the gesture of the brushstrokes that will reference; landscape, the sea, weather and time of day.
