Dir Christopher Zalla | 2023 | US/Mexico | 127 minutes | English, Spanish (with subtitles) | rated 12A
In a Mexican border town plagued by neglect and corruption, a frustrated teacher (Emmy Award nominee Eugenio Derbez, CODA) tries a radical new method to unleash the curiosity and potential of his students... and maybe even their genius.
Who will the sixth-grade students at Jose Urbina Lopez Elementary in Matamoros, Mexico, become? They are among the worst-performing students in the country; the world they know is one of violence and hardship, and their classrooms are dominated by discipline. The new teacher, Sergio Juarez, is trying something different; there’s just one problem: Sergio has no idea what he’s doing!
Director Christopher Zalla returns (Padre Nuestro, U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize 2007) with this honest, playful, powerfully inspiring story about a teacher who takes a radical approach with overlooked, apathetic kids to trigger their curiosity and discover the joy of learning… to let kids — who live in a world where they can't be kids — become kids again. Based on true events, Radical shines a light on the incredible potential children can manifest when an innovative teacher empowers them to think for themselves.
Cornwall Film Festival Directors pick & Winner of Festival Favorite Award at the Sundance Film Festival, "This heartwarming story is for everyone who has ever struggled with an education system that doesn't fit, a great film, not to be missed!" Louise Fox
