Portrait sketch in charcoal workshop with Hugh Appleton
All equipment and materials will be provided. You will be guided through the steps of constructing your drawing, building a sense of three-dimensional mass, and achieving a likeness.
A model will be sitting for the entire session, and the techniques you'll learn (which can also be applied to working from a photograph) will enable you to work by eye, without the need for drawing grids or visual aids. I will explain my process, then be on hand to offer help and guidance to each person individually.
If you'd like to use different materials, you're welcome to, but working with charcoal allows you to concentrate on achieving a likeness without having to worry about the complexities of colour. It can feel messy and intimidating if you're not used to it, but I'll show you how to handle it effectively so that you can achieve powerful drawings in very little time.
The workshop will take place in the beautiful and spacious main gallery located on the second floor of The Poly, right in the vibrant centre of Falmouth.
