A look back over Karen Hemsley-Biggs' artistic journey and reflection on how her distinctive style has evolved.
A collection of works from line and wash drawings, when she very early on decided to draw directly in permanent ink to gain confidence in the ‘drawn line’ to exploration of acrylic paint as a more vibrant medium. This stage revealing how she preferred a smooth surface and to build up smooth layers, creating almost printed works.
Last year was partly spent exploring mixed media. Making her own collage papers with a gel plate and with acrylic paints printing with botanicals, producing a series called “Little jugs of joy”.
Process is a very personal thing being made up of the artistic choices made during exploration. Artists are advised to pay attention to what they like, the tools and mediums preferred in order to find their own unique and authentic style. This is also a time to allow oneself to say ‘no’ to what we don’t like. This collection of work shows the journey through these styles and how they were discovered revealing some surprising common threads.
“The ‘journey’ isn’t over but look how far we have come”.
