Fishing boats are usually depicted as a subordinate element of a coastal scene. Edward has produced a series of paintings that highlight their distinctiveness. His intention from the start was to create a strong visual - sorting out examples to illustrate this through their design livery. In some paintings Edward presents examples that demonstrated a dichotomy between sea washed pristine paint and the inevitable degradation. They represent part of a bigger picture and in some cases he felt the need to paint more than one area of the same boat.
When you arrive at a harbour and conditions are just right, with lots of sunlight and a light breeze over the water, one can be a witness to a visual phenomenon. The moored boats cast their reflections. The reflection appears to grow in size, twist, distort, dissipate and repeat, never to witness the same shape again. It’s a magical extravaganza! Its akin to looking into a kaleidoscope. Edward finds it mesmerising. Based on many hours of observing this spectacle, he has produced a series of paintings representative of the myriad of this visual dynamic.
Edward came to live in Cornwall in 2015. He works from his home studio on the Roseland peninsular, close to the sea and beach in the village of Gorran Haven. He walks the coastal path to Mevagissey Harbour, where inspiration for this series of paintings began.
