In June 2018, Refugee Week will reach an important milestone: 20 years of celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees.
Join us for our film night screening of Eyes of Exodus: Four days during the Syrian migrant crisis on the most remote island in
Greece reveals an intimate and complicated relationship between refugees and
locals, fear and hope, and the healing versus destructive force change bears on
love at a personal and national level. Local man, Paul Haines will talk
about his experience working with refugees in this context.
We will also show a couple of other film shorts picked by the organisers of refugee Week, and will then be hosting a discussion panel to discuss what we can do here in Cornwall.
On the discussion panel will be:
Chair: Jeremy Puttnam // Jeremy is an Anglican priest serving in Truro. All Saints Highertown has been actively involved in a Cornwall wide response to the refugee crisis since August 2015. Jeremy chairs the Cornwall Refugee Resettlement Network, sits on a multiagency working group for promoting inclusion and equality in Cornwall, and is currently developing a new Sanctuary in Cornwall initiative with other likeminded organisations.
Nour Chakroun // Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Nour is a community development worker and runs a Truro based women's group Inspiring Women Network since 2010. Nour is also an active member and faith facilitator for the Cornwall Faith Forum. Nour has 3 young girls who are home-educated.
Helen Tanner LLB PgDip DTH MA // Helen is a Peacebuilder, Psychosocial Consultant, Speaker, Trainer, and qualified Dramatherapist with an extensive portfolio of working nationally (including seven years as Charity Director) and internationally (including New Zealand, Botswana, Tunisia and war-affected Libya, Myanmar, South Sudan, Kosovo, and Belfast).
