Lee Kellgren, Derek Hayes, Dave Pentin, Maggie Cochran
The Terrace Gallery opened in Penryn in 2020 and the studios above soon became a hive of artistic activity. The original resident artists were Dave Pentin, Lee Kellgren and Derek Hayes. In 2022 they were joined by artist Maggie Cochran. The resident artists have annual shows at the Terrace Gallery and now in Sep 2022, the four artists have brought a selection of their new artwork to be seen at The Poly Galleries in Falmouth. An exciting variety of oil and acrylic paintings, gum and ink, drawings, linocut prints and collage.
Lee Kellgren studied Printmaking and Fine Art at Bristol School of Art. She was formerly an artist printmaker in Bristol, specializing in atmospheric etchings. Now in Cornwall, she paints contemporary landscape oils. The images use glowing colour layers to give a sense of place and quality of light. Inspired by the inter-play of sea and sky of the nearby South Cornwall coast- capturing wild skies or moments of stillness when the sky glows, the sea shines and the changing light plays tricks. The paintings have many layers using experimental techniques of acrylic followed by oil paint and oil glazes.
Derek Hayes has a degree in Fine Art, but spent most of his time
there, and subsequently, doing animation. He is now an award-winning animator
and film director but has come back to making still images in recent years.
Drawing on everything from Renaissance paintings to comics and photography.
Derek aims to create something new from the clash between odd bedfellows, in
paint, pencil, collage and print.
Dave Pentin is a design graduate of Falmouth School of
Art. Now permanently back in the Cornish landscape he is enjoying experimenting
with gum Arabic, acrylic inks, cold wax & oil paints. To share this
fascinating layering technique, he regularly runs workshops at the
Terrace Gallery in Penryn. A big supporter of StreetDraw24, Dave often participates,
donating his artwork to help this homelessness charity.
Maggie Cochran has a Fine Art degree from the University of Chichester and won
the Cornwall Life Landscape Painter of the Year 2016. Maggie’s art is all about
her love affair with the Cornish beaches and coastline.
“I
want to bring home that feeling of being on the beach and to hang on to it, so
I pour it out in my paintings – those feelings of freedom, joy, energy,
serenity and awe at the sheer beauty, power and magnificence of the coastal
landscape. There’s a sense of time passing with the movement of the tides but also
a sense of timelessness and just being in that moment and being completely
happy”.
Maggie’s
love of the ocean has led her to partner up with marine conservation charity
Sea-Changers using her art to help conserve the marine environment that she is
so passionate about.
