AHL: Norman & Alethea Garstin - Two Impressionists in Cornwall

Join local art historian Catherine Wallace for an Art history talk delving into the often-overlooked legacy of Norman Garstin (1847-1926), an esteemed artist of the original Newlyn School. Discover Garstin's mesmerizing landscapes around Newlyn, as well as his evocative paintings capturing the essence of Belgium and Brittany, where he dedicated significant time to teaching painting courses.

Wallace will discuss the influence Norman Garstin imparted on his daughter, Alethea Garstin (1894-1978), who, inspired by renowned Newlyn painters such as Dod Procter, emerged as a prominent impressionist in the United Kingdom from the 1940s to the 1960s.

Catherine Wallace is a freelance art historian, writer and lecturer specialising in British and  European 19th and 20th century art with a focus on artists who were based in Cornwall, England. Wallace also has an in depth knowledge of commercial contemporary art and artists from Cornwall. Catherine Wallace has over 30 years experience as a curator and writer on art. This informs the lectures and guided tours she now offers online and live in Cornwall.
