Sophie Velzian: Light Fantastic

Sophie Velzian paints the Helford River, that Cornish gem of clear water, soft light and pine trees. Her oil and wax paintings are rich in colours and textures that convey the mood and magic of this place. She draws inspiration from the tangerines and pinks of dawn, her signature palette. Her paintings are luminous and expressive, a celebration of her passion and joy for this unique coastline and its history.

Sophie is a landscape artist who graduated with a First from the Slade School of Art. She paints the Helford River in Cornwall, a place of clear water, soft light and pine trees. She works in oil and cold wax, creating layers of rich colours and textures that evoke the atmosphere and emotion of this enchanting location. Inspired by early morning walks and swims, she uses the tangerines and pinks of dawn as her signature palette. Her paintings are luminous and expressive, reflecting her passion and joy for this unique coastline and its history.

“Trees crowd thickly and darkly to the water’s edge, the moss is succulent and green… the mouth of the creek… there is something of a mystery about it, even now, something of an enchantment.” Frenchman’s Creek, Daphne du Maurier
