Bad Sex Writing Workshop

Join writer Laura Horton and comedian Suzy Bennett for Bad Sex Writing. There will be a free workshop in the afternoon, where different prompts and writing exercises will encourage participants to find ways to write comically about sex – be that a short story, a poem or a play. November the 9th is British Pudding Day so the theme/prompt is Pudding.

In the evening there will be a performance where Laura and Suzy will read some of these pieces out, alongside other submissions.  (Book performance here: https://thepoly.org/whats-on/event/3316/bad-sex-writing-show)

Imagine if Letters Live and My Dad Wrote a Porno had a baby.

Audiences can come to one or both events.

Laura started Bad Sex Writing in 2021 as a way for people to create funny, engaging and accessible fiction about sex, with no pressure to write well.

To celebrate British Pudding Day on 9th November, we're inviting submissions on the topic of puddings, from sticky toffee to treacle tart and spotted dick, the options are endless! Get your deliberately bad erotic fiction in to us by Monday 4th November at 6pm with a chance for your piece to be read out on the night. Be it a poem, a short story or perhaps a play, we just ask that you don't exceed 1000 words. Send your submissions to badsexwriting@gmail.com

“Even though these events are spaces for humour, I’ve had a lot of people open up after workshops, making me realise how messy everyone’s romantic lives are. Ultimately, this sort of camaraderie makes sex less intimating – and makes us all feel less alone.”

Laura Horton is a multi-award-winning writer and former Plymouth Laureate of Words 2020-2023. Her play Breathless won a Fringe First and enjoyed runs at Soho Theatre and Off-Broadway in 2023. Her short film, A Summer of Birds, was Toast of the Fringe winner, 2021. Laura launched digital projects Hidden by Things and Theatre Stories, for which she was in The Stage100. She runs Bad Sex Writing workshops and is represented by United Agents.

Former Butlins Redcoat and proud Devonian Suzy Bennett ‘accidentally’ won the prestigious Funny Women Award on her 6th gig and has kept the laughs (and her accent) going strong ever since, performing at comedy clubs and festivals around the UK as well as overseas. She is the voice of the ‘PlymouthTrails’ tour app and was recently named as one of the ‘50 Coolest people from Plymouth’ by the Evening Herald (It was in no particular order so she assumes she came third after Dawn French and Wayne Sleep)
