Through surreal aquatic landscapes, feelings of freedom entwined with depictions of fear and chaos are alluringly narrated throughout each painting. Documentation of Skelton's dreams is where each piece begins. Furthermore, appreciation for the surroundings that Cornwall has to offer plays a significant role in her practice. With inspiration coming from the sea, the unconscious state of mind, and the childish excitement that mythological creatures bring. Presenting actions of flying, falling, swimming, and drowning. Each painting has its own story to tell, whether it is expressing a rebirth of freedom, or the longing for it.
Self-portraiture is where Skelton began her journey. She then moved on to paint others, slowly building up her skills as a portrait artist. While Skelton felt prideful knowing she could create these realistic paintings, they were never fulfilling. She always knew she had more to say, but didn't know how to visually express those feelings - until she came to Falmouth in 2018 to study Fine art. This is when Skelton finally felt comfortable within her practice. Using oils as her primary medium, she create works of art that speak to her as a person.
"Swimming in the sea has also taught me a lot - as I apply the same aspects to my work as I do when swimming. Then I will then consistently dream of the water; the cycle then repeats itself." Daisy Skelton.
