A Treasury of Mayan Tales | With Charlotte Austwick FRGS

What is it like to be a child growing up in the jungles of Central America? Have you ever heard the tale of the ‘Hairy Sessimite’ or wondered about Ancient Temples hidden in the jungle surrounded by mystic waterfalls? Come and hear about these and more at this family friendly tale telling session with real life explorer Charlotte Austwick.

The event will combine readings from Charlottes new book ‘ A Treasury of Mayan Tales’ written and illustrated with the help of a Mayan community in Belize. Plus, a chance to see Mayan artefacts and artwork up close.

Suitable for children 4+, all children must be accompanied by an adult.

About the book

Written by children and illustrated by all ages of the community, A Treasury of Mayan Tales, contains five short stories which have been written in English, Mopan and Q’eqchi’ Maya and provides a rare glimpse into past and present Maya culture.

About Charlotte

Charlotte is an Anthropologist, Filmmaker, Educator and Author from South Wales. She was awarded the Scientific Exploration Society’s “Rivers Foundation Award” in 2019 for work in protecting and preserving two endangered indigenous Maya languages. Her work took her to the depths of the Central America jungle, where she lived and worked with the Maya to preserve their heritage, in a bid to preserve the language before globalisation causes its extinction. She is a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Royal Anthropological Institute and Member of the Explorers Club. In addition, as a result of her work, she has recently been awarded the “Cadogan Award for Resilience” by the British Dyslexia Association.
