Have a look at the calendar text here to see what's coming up.
All equipment and materials provided, class is run by Hugh Appleton.
I’ll walk you through you a logical sequence of steps that will help you to achieve a likeness, and a drawing that has depth and mass. We’ll be drawing a live model, but the same method can be used to work from photographs without using grids or dividers. You’ll learn how to see all the information you need.
We’ll build on whatever experience you already have and I encourage you to ask for 1-to-1 guidance on any particular element of the process you feel unsure about.
Charcoal is a very forgiving medium, and is the perfect preparation for painting in oils, but without the complication of colour. If you haven’t used it much before it can feel a little intimidating but I’ll show you how to tame it and make it your friend! You’ll be able to create powerful drawings in a fraction of the time it would take to make a comparable pencil drawing.
It will take place in the beautiful and spacious main gallery on the top floor of The Poly, which is in the vibrant centre of Falmouth. There’s also an excellent café (but I’ll provide tea, coffee and biscuits for our short breaks)
Testimonials
Jo – “I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Hugh Appleton studying portraiture at The Poly in Falmouth. The studio was spacious with plenty of natural light and enough space for everyone to take up a good position in front of the model; the music added a great vibe. Hugh created a lovely relaxed atmosphere, initially demonstrating painting technique, then allowing us to work independently but on hand to help and assist as required. I particularly enjoyed having Hugh paint alongside us during the sessions as it added a "collaborative feel” to the process.”
Erika – “. When we worked at the easel, Hugh was keen to give guidance, a different prospective and readily answered all questions. Throughout the workshop
