Abraham Ortelius, creator of the first modern atlas of the world, wrote, ‘No one, except from envy, resentment or ignorance of his art, would deny that the incredible Pieter Bruegel has been the most important painter of his century.’
In the last ten years of his life, Pieter Bruegel created some of the best-loved paintings in the world. What do we know about one of the most important personalities in the history of art? Why are his paintings admired everywhere? What makes them recognizable at once?
Michael Carver will show some of the paintings he has always loved and offer a personal answer to these questions.
