Dir. Michelangelo Frammartino | 2021 | 93 minutes | Italy, plus a programme of selected short films.
A work of nearly wordless organic beauty that touches on the mystical, from the visionary director of Le Quattro Volte, Michelangelo Frammartino’s Il Buco chronicles a visit through unknown depths of life and nature and parallels two great voyages to the interior. The film charts the extraordinary adventure of the members of the Piedmont Speleological Group as they explore Europe’s deepest cave in the untouched Calabrian hinterland. The bottom of the Bifurto Abyss, 700 meters below Earth, is reached for the first time. The intruders’ venture goes unnoticed by the inhabitants of a small neighbouring village, but not by the old shepherd of the Pollino plateau whose solitary life – and its passing - begins to interweave with the group’s journey into the deep.
Winner of the 2021 Venice Film Festival Special Jury Prize, Il Buco leads a screening programme curated by Falmouth University’s DeathxDesignxCulture conference.
The programme features a selection of short films by local filmmakers which look at themes of death and the deep – including Mark Jenkin’s work with The Smile Skrting on the Surface, Paul Mulraney’s From the Culch, and Andres Orrela’s Fathom.
The films will be introduced by director Paul Mulraney.
