The Church Of The Lost Cause – A Film About Kneehigh

Dir. Brett Harvey | 2024 | 25 mins Main Feature, 15 mins Short Films plus Q&A | English

Kneehigh created joyful, anarchic and innovative theatre for over 40 years. Such an unconventional company deserves an unconventional film. THE CHURCH OF THE LOST CAUSE is less a traditional documentary more like a family photo album or pages from a scrapbook featuring rarely seen footage from the archive.

The screening will also feature a selection of director Brett Harvey's short films:

Aestune (2025) - a music video by Three Cane Whale (members of the band performed in several Kneehigh shows)

HAND (2021) - a self reflective essay on living with Parkinson’s disease (proceeds from the screening will go to Parkinson’s UK)

An Ballad Texas Harvey (2021) - a “true” story about a right dodgy bugger (Brett’s last official project for Kneehigh)

As well as a Q&A from Brett Harvey & Mike Shepherd.

Brett Harvey is a writer & director based in Cornwall. His debut feature film Weekend Retreat won multiple awards including Best Director at the London Independent Film Festival and his second feature Brown Willy (described by The New Statesman as “Cornwall’s answer to Withnail and I”) won the Golden Chough at the Cornwall Film Festival. His third feature Long Way Back was released into cinemas in 2022 and won Best Feature at the Wales International Film Festival.

Mike Shepherd is an actor, director, teacher and the artistic director of Kneehigh. Shepherd founded Kneehigh in 1980.
