Come with us as we discover how language can enlighten, amuse and enrage us as well as hide what we are really trying to say.
The central characters are Brodie, an academic linguist, who researches almost extinct languages of Eurasia, and a gorilla, who may know a small number of words in the English language, and lives in an enclosure at the local zoo. We explore how Brodie encounters the limitations of everyday languages – of intimacy with her younger partner, of technical terminologies with the medical specialists and counsellors to whom she is directed. Simultaneously, she discovers the power of unspoken feelings and emotions, especially with the majestic primate to whom she is increasingly drawn as her own problems become overwhelming.
Performed by a cast of three, two of whom play multiple roles, this is a meaty piece written by the award-winning American feminist playwright, Madeleine George. This emotionally engaging piece will make you laugh out loud and bring you to tears.
