11-14 JUNE 2018. A special 3-day jamboree of sail building up to the Suhaili 50 Falmouth Parade of Sail to mark the 50th Anniversary of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s departure to become the first man to sail solo non-stop around the globe back in 1968/9.
Sir Robin was the first person to sail single handed and non-stop around the world between 14 June 1968 and 22 April 1969. 50 years have gone by since Sir Robin Knox-Johnston made history by becoming the first man to sail solo and non-stop around the globe in 1968-69. One of nine sailors to compete in the Times Golden Globe Race, Sir Robin set off from Falmouth, with no sponsorship, on 14 June 1968. With his yacht Suhaili packed to the gunwales with supplies he set off on a voyage that was to last just over ten months. He arrived back in Falmouth after 312 days at sea, on 22 April 1969, securing his place in the history books.
To help celebrate this momentous achievement The
Royal Cornwall Yacht Club will be holding a BBQ which will give you chance to
meet Sir Robin, and other sailors that will be taking part in the Parade of
sail. To finish of the evening Falmouth Town Council will be putting on a
firework display in which you will be able to watch from RCYC.
The BBQ is on the 13th June
and starts at 7:00pm with the arrival of Sir Robin at 7:30pm. At the Royal
Cornwall Yacht Club.
