Vanessa finds inspiration in the Post Industrial landscape, fragmented stories, quiet forgotten corners and edges, that which is visible and that which is not. She is drawn to spaces that go largely unseen in a modern fast paced life. Here, rather than one series of works, she offers a number of conversations which are all part of the one conversation which is her practice.
An art practice is an ongoing conversation between the artist, the materials and processes and their experience of the world within and the experience of the world without. Entangled within the weave of her experiences, perceptions and influences is a fragment of a poem that Vanessa discovered over 30 years ago (although she didn’t discover it’s author until 30 years later). It continues to fascinate and to pull her along.
The three lines were from a poem by TS Eliot ‘The Hanging Man’ -
“…between the idea and the reality between the motion and the act falls the shadow…”.
